Türk bayrağı, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nin ulusal ve resmî bayrağıdır. Al renkli zemin üzerinde beyaz hilâl ve yıldız ile oluşmuş bayrak ilk olarak 1844 yılında Abdülmecid dönemindeki Tanzimat sürecinde kabul edilmiş, Cumhuriyet döneminde 29 Mayıs 1936'da 2994 Sayılı Türk Bayrağı Kanunu ile Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nin ulusal bayrağı olarak kanunlaşmıştır. 22 Eylül 1983'te 2893 Sayılı Türk Bayrağı Kanunu ile bayrak ölçütleri belirlenmiş ve bayrak son hâlini almıştır.

Efsaneye göre bayraktaki al, kan kırmızısıdır ve şehitlerin dökülen kanlarını temsil eder. Gece yarısı bu kanların üzerine yansıyan hilâl biçimindeki ay ve bir yıldızla beraber Türk bayrağının görüntüsü oluşur. Bu efsanenin 1389 yılında meydana gelen I. Kosova Muharebesi'nde gerçekleştiği söylenmektedir.

Ayrıca İstiklâl Marşı'nın birinci, ikinci ve onuncu kıtalarında Türk bayrağından bahsedilir.

Flag of Turkey

The national flag of Turkey, officially the Turkish flag (Turkish: Türk bayrağı), is a red flag featuring a white star and crescent from its emblem which was the prominent symbol of the Ottoman Empire, and in contemporary times used as a national symbol for some countries, and a recognized symbol of Islam however it does not exist as a religional mean in the Turkish flag.[3] The flag is often called "the red flag" (al bayrak), and is referred to as "the red banner" (al sancak) in the Turkish national anthem. The measures, geometric proportions, and exact tone of red of the flag of Turkey were legally standardized with the Turkish Flag Law on 29 May 1936.
