Milwaukee Packout Lockable Latch - Slim

This is a work in progress. Version 1.0 latch was designed for Model # 48-22-8435. I am working on building out the rest of the latches and will add them as I make them. If you see your model isn't listed, please comment with the model # and I will work on building a latch for it.

Summary

After having about $3000 USD worth of tools stolen from my truck in a smash-and-grab, I started exploring ways to deter future theft—specifically for my Packout boxes. Most solutions I found were bulky, required irreversible modifications, or cost over $200 USD plus shipping.

So, I designed a super slim latch lock upgrade that uses a standard 5/8" cam lock. Not only does it provide a little extra security, but it's easily reversible—just swap out the OEM latch for the new one and keep your original latch for later if you want to go back.

Disclaimer: This latch is intended to serve as a deterrent. It is by no means theft-proof, and a determined thief can still gain access. However, the goal is to make it harder and more time-consuming, hopefully preventing quick-grab scenarios.

Features

- Slim and Low-Profile: Keeps the Packout’s original form factor without bulky external add-ons.

- Reversible Installation: No permanent modifications required. Simply remove the old latch, transfer the spring, and install the new one.

- Uses Standard Hardware: All you need is a 5/8" cam lock (readily available online or at many hardware stores).

Print Settings

Pictured latch and lock was printed on a "highly" modified K1C (linear X-gantry, custom fan shroud) with Hyper PLA. Latch should be printed with either manual snug supports or organic tree supports on the spring "+" and where the keyhole is.

Printer: FDM or SLA (your preference; part size is small and well-suited for various printer types).

Layer Height: 0.2 mm (recommended to balance strength and print time).

Infill: 30% (or higher for added strength).

Material: PLA, PETG, or ABS should work. PETG or ABS might offer better durability in hot/cold environments.

Assembly Instructions

1) Remove Original Latch: Carefully remove the stock latch from your Packout. Keep the spring safe for reuse.

2) Transfer Spring: Move the spring from the old latch onto the new printed latch.

3) Install New Latch: Slide the new latch into the slot where the original latch was installed.

4) Add Cam Lock: Insert the 5/8" cam lock and secure it according to the lock manufacturer’s instructions.

That's it! Reversing the process is straightforward if you ever want to go back to the original Packout latch.

Usage

Lock & Go: Close the latch and lock it with your key. This should deter most casual opportunistic thieves.

Remain Vigilant: Always remember that no security solution is 100% effective. Continue storing high-value tools safely whenever possible.
