Thumbs Up / Thumbs Down Communication Keyrings – FreeCAD Quick-Craft with Purpose (Version 1)

This set of keyrings was born from a simple but powerful idea. My partner works with elderly individuals and people living with dementia, and she told me how valuable it is to have quick, visual tools for communication — especially when words are hard to find. That conversation led to my original emoji keyring project, and now this thumbs up / thumbs down version brings that same idea into a more direct and universally understood form.

This model is Version 1 of the thumbs design, but it’s actually built using the Version 1 framework of the emoji keyring — the familiar 3-part assembly with a contrasting insert sandwiched between front and back layers.

These symbols are perfect for supporting clear, non-verbal feedback — ideal for people who are neurodivergent, non-verbal, or simply need an easy way to show approval or disapproval. I’ve shared sets with a local primary school where they’re being used in the classroom with great enthusiasm. They’re fun, effective, and accessible — and of course, they make great keyrings or can be resized to fit shopping trolley tokens too!

🔧 3-Part Design – Easy Assembly, Fully Customisable

This design follows the 3-part approach I developed in the emoji series: a double-sided keyring with a solid insert in between. The insert blocks out visibility of the reverse cutout — and by choosing a contrasting colour, it becomes a perfect opportunity for personalisation.

Originally, the insert was a circle, but alignment was fiddly — so I switched to a keyed shape that locks everything into perfect position. The result? A tidy, satisfying build every time.

Here’s how to make your own:

Print the thumbs up and thumbs down fronts and backs.

Pick your insert colour — fun, calming, or meaningful to you.

Assemble and glue — now you’ve got your own unique set of communication keyrings!
