♻️ REUSABLE FILAMENT SPOOL – Cardboard Conversion

A reusable, two-piece locking filament spool designed to convert damaged or dusty cardboard spools into durable plastic — or function as a standalone filament spool.

This model was originally created to solve real-world issues with Creality HyperPLA cardboard spools used in the Creality CFS, where bent edges, crushed hubs, or cardboard dust can cause feeding and rotation problems.

To handle real-world cardboard variations, optional 82 mm add-on hub rings are included, allowing you to fine-tune the fit when cardboard side panels are removed.

🧠 PROJECT BACKGROUND

Creality HyperPLA cardboard spools are lightweight and eco-friendly — but they don’t always survive shipping. Bent rims, crushed hubs, and cardboard dust can lead to feeding issues, especially in enclosed multi-material systems like the Creality CFS.

Cardboard hub diameters also vary more than expected once the side panels are removed.

This reusable spool was designed as a Creality-focused drop-in solution to:

● Restore damaged HyperPLA cardboard spools

● Keep cardboard dust out of the CFS

● Compensate for real-world hub size variation

● Maintain original 200 mm spool dimensions

● Avoid manually re-spooling filament

It can also be used as a standard reusable filament spool, even without cardboard cores.

● 200 mm outer diameter to match Creality HyperPLA spools

● Two-piece twist-lock design for fast, tool-free assembly

● Open spoke pattern reduces material usage while maintaining rigidity

● Optimized for smooth rotation in the Creality CFS and similar systems

● Four directional filament anchor holes (two per side) allow secure filament starts when loading filament onto the hub as a standalone spool

🔧 PRINTING NOTES

Printed examples shown were completed using PLA, but PETG or ABS may also be used depending on your environment and storage needs.

Recommended settings:

● 0.4 mm nozzle

● Standard layer heights (0.2 mm works well)

● Default wall and infill settings

Print orientation:

● Print both spool halves flat on the bed

● Print hub rings flat

Assembly tips:

● If your cardboard hub fits snugly, use the standard 80 mm hub

● If the hub feels loose after removing side panels, slide on the 82 mm add-on rings before final assembly
