Why This Calibration Exists

A lot of creators online say “use these ironing settings and it will work” — but in reality, that almost never holds true. No two printers are exactly the same, and filament differences alone can completely change ironing results.This is an updated and improved version of my original ironing calibration test(original file can be found here:

Why This Version Is Different

When running my original test, I noticed the small circular patterns were difficult to read and compare, especially once ironing artifacts appeared. To make results easier to evaluate, I redesigned the test to use larger, clearly labeled squares and a more structured approach.

How This Calibration Is Structured

Plates 1–10: Flow % Plates

Each plate represents a single ironing flow percentage

Every plate contains 10 squares, each 40mm × 40mm

Each square tests a different ironing speed, ranging from:

10 mm/s → 100 mm/s

This allows you to visually compare speed vs surface finish at a fixed flow percentage.

Run the full calibration first

This gives you a broad overview of how different flow % and speeds behave on your printer and filament.

Identify the best-looking flow percentage

Ignore perfection at this stage — just narrow it down.

Move to the secondary test

Reprint only the selected flow %

Only print squares within ±40 mm/s of the speed that looked best

This saves time and filament while dialing in final settings

Important Notes

I’ve noticed that very low speeds (10–30 mm/s) combined with lower flow percentages can sometimes cause extruder clogs, depending on filament and hotend. Because of this, I usually skip the 10–30 mm/s range unless specifically testing edge cases.

High-Speed Ironing Test – Plate 11

Plate 11 is designed for users who want to push ironing speeds further:

Speeds range from 110 mm/s to 200 mm/s

You’ll need to adjust the ironing flow % manually based on what you want to test

Larger production prints

Testing time vs surface quality trade-offs

Final Validation Plate – Plate 12

A single 80mm × 80mm squareUsed to verify overall surface quality after choosing your final settingsI’ve found that some flow/speed combinations look great on small areas but can show imperfections on larger surfaces, so this plate helps confirm real-world results before applying settings to a full print.
