Creality Space Pi Review

I recently got a Space Pi FREE by redeeming my Creality Points. Thanks @Creality Cloud !

Let’s take a look at how my budget Comgrow filament dryer compares to the Creality Space Pi. Despite getting the Space Pi for free, I am going to remain as objective as possible for this review.

The Only Win For My Budget Dryer - Price

The Creality Space Pi commands a relatively high price of $90-$100. I personally have been using a Comgrow dryer, which comes in at just $40.

The only other small critique I have for the Space Pi is that the screen is not always super responsive, and the digital buttons require a fairly firm press.

Where They Both Excel

Mechnical Components

Both units have a great rolling system and have holes that can be used to run filament through. This way you can actively dry spools while printing. I will say that the Creality Space Pi included some PTFE tubes to make that process a bit more seamless, so I would almost put this as a win for the Space Pi

However, the Comgrow does have a little bit more flexibility as far as configuration. The Space Pi requires more space behind it, and also opens up to a wider profile, making it a little harder to fit into my printer’s space.

Where the Space Pi Wins

Higher Temperature

The Space Pi can maintain temperature as high as 70°C, whereas the Comgrow only goes up to 50°C. This means it can dry a wider range of materials without having to run forever.

Built-In Desiccant Storage

Unlike the Comgrow, the Space Pi has two dedicated pockets for desiccant, allowing for it to act as a dry box even when it is powered down. I have kept desiccant packets in my Comgrow, but they kind of just float around and sometimes get in the way.

Longer Timer Settings

My Comgrow only allows for the drying time to be set for a maximum of 12 hours. I have had some prints using TPU where I need active drying to take place for 30-40 hours. This meant I was having to set reminders for myself to go restart the dry box. With the Space Pi, I can set the dry time to match the print time, even on very long prints.

Conclusion

The Space Pi definitely wins over my typical budget Comgrow dryer. However, it does come at more than twice the cost.

Whether you need to spend the extra is going to depend mainly on personal needs and preferences. If you are a beginner who just needs to dry the occasional roll of PLA, a budget dryer might be the better choice for you.

However, more experienced makers will definitely see the benefit of shelling out for the more professional choice, the Creality Space Pi.

Here are some scenarios where you will be glad you spent the extra:

• You produce prints commercially and need your dry time as short as possible.

• You are using materials like PA-CF that require higher temperature for drying.

• You have long printing times, and need long dryer run-times to match.

• You intend to leave filament in the dryer for long periods of time, even when powered down.
