Dimmable USB powered Lithophane frame using Harbor Freight Wall light for components.

It uses the internal components removed from a HF dimmable wall light ($2.87) and USB charging jack from Amazon ($5.89 for a pack of 10). It consists of a frame and back panel that snap together and a knob. All of the electronics mount to the back panel.

Steps:

1) Print the three parts.

2) Disassemble the light.

a. Remove the batteries.

b. Remove the 4 Phillip screws in the corners to separate the light. Do not lose the screws as you will reuse some of them.

c. Remove the 2 screws holding the dimmer in place.

d. Cut the two wires going to the battery holder close as you can to the battery holder.

e. Carefully pry the two LED strips off of the plastic posts using a small screwdriver

3) Remove the center screw from the knob adapter on the dimmer and remove the adapter.

4) You should now have an assembly that looks like this:

5) Assembly:

a. Solder the wire from the dimmer to the VBus terminal on the charging port.

b. Solder the wire from the LED Strip to the GND terminal on the charging port.

c. Plug in a usb charger to the port to make sure everything works.

d. Screw the dimmer to the new case back with the two smaller screws.

e. Screw the charging port to the two posts in the corner of the of the case back.

f. Use hot glue or CA glue to attach the led strips to the case back.

g. Install the knob on the dimmer.

h. Snap the lithophane in the frame.

i. Snap the back onto the frame.

j. Plug in and enjoy.

Notes:

If you want to make the box shallower, you may want to put a diffuser between the LEDs and lithophane to keep from having bright spots. I found that printing a 1mm thick rectangle the size of the picture from white PLA works well in a 1 inch deep box.

All parts can be printed with no supports.
