What is SLA 3D printing? A brief introduction to the technology and how it works.

SLA 3D printing, or Stereolithography, is a type of additive manufacturing process that uses a vat of liquid photopolymer resin and a laser to create parts layer-by-layer.

The process begins with a 3D model, which is sliced into thin layers using specialized software. The liquid resin is then poured into a vat, and a platform is lowered into the resin to a depth corresponding to the thickness of a single layer.

A laser beam is then directed onto the surface of the resin, tracing the shape of the first layer and causing the photopolymer resin to solidify and adhere to the platform. The platform is then lowered slightly, and the process repeats for each subsequent layer, until the entire part is complete.

Once the part is finished, it is removed from the printer and washed in a solvent to remove any excess resin. Finally, the part is cured using a UV light to fully harden the resin and achieve its final mechanical properties.

SLA 3D printing is known for its ability to produce highly detailed and intricate parts with excellent surface finish, making it a popular choice for applications in the jewelry, dental, and medical fields, as well as for producing prototypes and models for engineering and product design.
