Overview:

It is crucial for the first layer of the print to adhere tightly to the bed. Only then can the subsequent layers be constructed successfully. If the first layer fails to adhere to the bed, it can lead to issues with the subsequent layers, as shown in the picture below.

The following are four common reasons for the first layer not adhering and their respective solutions.

1. Uneven Print Bed

Solution: Level the printer's heated bed.

1.1 Manual leveling: Adjust the distance between the bed and the nozzle by adjusting the four spring nuts beneath the bed. The ideal distance is approximately the thickness of an A4 paper. Turn the nozzle counterclockwise to move it away from the bed, and clockwise to bring it closer. Many printers have screws or handles to adjust the bed's position.

1.2 Automatic leveling: Many printers now come with automatic leveling functionality. Use this feature before printing to level the heated bed.

1.3 If your printer encounters issues with the first layer not adhering to the bed during printing, the first thing to check is whether your bed itself is leveled. If it is not, one side of the bed may be closer to the nozzle while the other side is too far, leading to printing failures. A leveled print bed is essential for successfully printing the first layer.

Solution: Adjust the spring nuts beneath the heated bed (or adjust the Z-axis) to adjust the distance between the bed and the nozzle.

If the distance between the print bed and the nozzle is too far, it becomes challenging for the print to adhere to the bed. If the bed is too close to the nozzle, it can directly affect the material extrusion. Leveling the bed before printing helps the model adhere to the bed (refer to the diagram for appropriate adjustments).

3. First Layer Printing Speed Too Fast

Solution: Reduce the printing speed of the first layer (initial layer printing speed).

Explanation: When the extruder prints the first layer on the bed, it is important for the filament to adhere properly to the surface so that subsequent layers can be printed successfully. If the first layer is printed too quickly, the filament may not have enough time to adhere to the bed. A common method is to decrease the printing speed of the first layer. Sufficient printing time ensures better adhesion to the bed and provides adequate material for stable subsequent printing, reducing the chances of warping or detachment. The ideal state for the first layer is a flattened state on the print bed.

3.1 Adjust the printing speed on the printer during the printing of the first layer and then revert to the original speed after the first layer is completed (specific interface may vary depending on the printer model).

3.2 Set the initial layer speed in the slicing software when preparing the model.

4. Surface Treatment of the Print Bed

Solution: Apply textured paper or solid adhesive to the print bed.

Explanation: Different filaments and materials have varying degrees of adhesion. The print bed, usually made of fiberglass, has a smooth surface, which makes it difficult for the filament to adhere. Therefore, additional measures are needed to ensure a stronger bond between the filament and the print bed (note: older machines use fiberglass boards, while newer ones may utilize magnetic or glass beds with adhesive, but the solution remains the same).

4.1 Using textured paper allows for convenient adhesion with common 3D printing filaments. It can be easily applied to the print bed surface and removed or replaced to accommodate different filaments.

4.2 Using solid adhesive, such as PVP, evenly coat the glass bed. This ensures a strong bond between the filament and the print bed, and it can be easily cleaned as PVP is water-soluble.
