3D printing is an incredibly rewarding, innovative technology. Sometimes, it can run into issues. One of the most common problems that come up is when the 3D print does not stick to the bed. 

This often happens because of incorrect temperature settings, inadequate filaments, or clogged nozzles. Fortunately, these issues can be easily addressed with a few adjustments and maintenance to get your 3D printer back in working order and continue enjoying 3D printing projects and models!

How can I make my 3D printer bed adhesion better? Just follow these methods to improve your 3D printing adhesion.

#1. Reduce the distance between the Nozzle and the Print Bed

If nozzles have a very long distance from to print bed, the filament may just be loosely mounted on the print bed but it cannot be properly connected to it. 

Ideally, the space is sized to make it easy to press filaments into the print bed. When these solutions come from the basic 3D printer, the spacing of the printer bed with the print nozzle is the biggest adjustment screw in print bed adhesion. The nozzle is placed between the beds during the leveling of prints depending on the thickness of the paper. The intention with leveling is to keep the distances identical across all the printed beds.

#2. Reduce the printing speed of the first layer

In 3D printing, slower printing speeds increase bed adhesion. The filament keeps hotter, because it's near the 3D printer nozzle, and floats better over the paper surface. It also reduces the force to flex if a flow mechanism is used to manipulate a filament.

An increase in printing speed in the first layers of 5 to 10 mm/sec greatly helps with adhesion. Most slicers have default settings that allow faster printing on the initial layer. Normally they are around half the normal print speed – around 20 – 30 mm/sec for the majority of 3D printing systems.

#3. Check the build plate

The first thing you should do if your 3D print is not sticking to the bed is to check the build plate. Make sure that it is level and that there are no objects blocking the path of the nozzle. Additionally, check to see if the build plate is clean. If it is not, clean it with isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth.

If the build plate is level and clean, but your 3D print still isn't sticking, you may need to adjust the bed level. To do this, you will need to calibrate the Z-axis endstop. Once you have done this, you can use the Z-axis adjustment screws to raise or lower the bed until it is level with the nozzle.

If you have tried both of the above methods and your 3D print still isn't sticking, you may need to change the filament. Some filaments are more prone to warping than others, which can make it difficult for them to adhere to the bed. If you are using a filament that is known to warp, try switching to a different type of filament.

#6. Increase the extrusion temperature

Another reason your 3D print may not be sticking to the bed is that the extrusion temperature is too low. If the extrusion temperature is too low, the plastic will not be hot enough to melt and adhere properly to the bed. To fix this, increase the extrusion temperature by 10-20 degrees Celsius until your 3D print sticks properly.

#7. Use a heated bed

If you are still having trouble getting your 3D print to stick, try using a heated bed. A heated bed will help to keep the plastic warm and prevent it from cooling too quickly, which can cause warping and delamination. To use a heated bed, simply turn on the heated bed switch on your 3D printer and set the temperature to 50-60 degrees Celsius.

Brim is a thin layer of plastic that surrounds your object and helps it adhere better to the build plate. Raft is similar to the brim, but it also creates a foundation for your object that helps it stay in place during printing.
