A 3D Printer on the market for beginners and a budget-friendly option, the Creality Ender 3 is one of the best pieces of 3D printing hardware in recent memory. It has a good price-to-performance ratio and works quite nicely as a tool for beginners.

If you’re not familiar with 3D printing beds, it’s basically a flat surface that acts as a platform for a 3D printer to build an object. The measurements of a 3D printing bed are important due to the print volume and dimensions of your object.

What are the dimensions of Creality’s Ender 3s (Original, Pro and V2) Bed?

The Ender 3 Bed Size sports similarities between the different specifications released by Creality. At 220 x 220 x 250 mm, the build volume is good enough to get you some stunning objects through different printing sessions.

Ender 3 Bed Size

Interestingly enough, the full volume of the Ender-3 original bed size along with the Ender-3 Pro, Ender-3 V2 bed size and other specifications is quite large and more impressive than its build volume.

The actual area of the Ender 3 Print bed size measures at 235 x 235 mm. Meanwhile, the total size of the device comes in at 440 x 410 x 465 mm.

Why is the usable print area smaller than the build surface size?

The Ender 3 max bed size might come as a surprise to you, but it is actually designed this way for safety and convenience.

The first reason is due to tolerance stack-up. The Ender 3s are designed with various mechanical joints and rods connecting its parts. Each of these rods consist of various sizes, so the way its components are designed includes the need for tolerance. The extra bed space accounts for structural integrity of the overall design, helping you avoid any faulty constructs with your objects.

Another reason behind the Creality ender 3 max bed size is down to the presence of clips. When designing a 3D printing bed, there’s a need to accommodate other elements. Clips are helpful with holding certain parts of an object in place. Without space made specifically for them, these clips can often take up a good bit of space on your 3D printing bed.

Can I change the Ender 3 Bed Size?

It’s not impossible that you may feel inclined to change the bed size yourself. Luckily, there are ways to exceed this size and there’s really no reason why you should not, especially if you feel up for the task!

Some experts have reportedly increased the print volume to higher dimensions, but you’ll need to be wary of the fact that the manufacturer chose the default print size due to its tolerance margin.

If you want to increase the print size through minor increments like 5 mm, you’re likely not going to find a problem there. Little margins in the Ender 3 bed size, height and other specifications should work to get your object in the size you prefer.

Step 1: Upgrade Your Hardware

If you’re convinced that you’d like to follow through with a bigger bed size, then it’s time to upgrade your hardware!

If you’re running a setup that makes use of clips, it’s time to change the format for its installment. There are two ways to do this, either: by doing away with the clips you’re currently using or changing your printing bed.

If you opt for ditching your clips, you’ll need to change them to something else. It’s best to bring out your inner DIY expert at this point as you can try using household items that work well as a substitute.

The second option is a bit trickier as changing the print bed will come with its own discrepancies. Still, you can choose a new print bed like Creality’s magnetic bed which works on the Ender 3 as a build surface.

Step 2: Upgrade Your Firmware

Upgrading the firmware on your Creality Ender 3 will help you unlock some helpful features that can enhance the 3D printing experience. By default, you’re only allowed to utilize 220 x 220 mm for your print surface. You can actually upgrade the firmware to a different version by following the steps detailed here. If you wish to upgrade the Creality Ender 3 V2, use this link instead.

Alternatively, you can choose to modify the code for the Ender 3. You can do this by updating to the latest version of your firmware and getting into the Marlin code. Changing this code comes with a fair bit of experimentation, but you can still make things convenient for yourself if BLTouch is installed on your Ender 3, Pro or V2. This guide is helpful if you choose to go with that route instead. A tip worth noting is that dialing your value up to 235 x 235 mm is not recommended.
